[since by his count he and Captain America are the only people with warden deals-and Captain America doesn't have an inmate.] It seems kind of selfish to say "Hey can I go back in time so my girlfriend doesn't turn out to hate me or my brother doesn't turn into some kind of strange underworld assassin." when our world is invaded by aliens and things are changing.

If there's one thing I've learned when you're dealing with people who have lived the kind of life she's lived it's...trust early on is really important. Have you and she gotten back in touch? She knows you're here right?

I think she could benefit from hanging out with more women.

Look. I just- [He sighs] I don't...I didn't expect to get a kid. I mean she's young. I feel a little like a parent though and that's way out of my league.

I'd like, eventually to put you and she back in touch but for now...is there anything you can tell me that you feel might be important? ...Something I can use?

I'm not asking for anything along those lines. Just if you happen to see her around and the mood takes you just...say Hi.

We are in touch. I wouldn't just leave her hanging out to dry here.

I understand it's hard when you get assigned a young inmate, but you're not her parent, and treating her like a kid isn't going to get you anywhere. Rose needs someone who's going to be there for her and be a role model, and yeah, you need to set an example and boundaries for her, but she's not a kid. I know it's a fine line to walk, but it's what you have to do if you're going to get through to her. [At some point down the line, Rose might come to think of him as family or something, but he feels like heading down that line at first might be a disaster considering, well. Everything. :|]

[Clint is listening intently] What's a good way to break the ice?

Talk to her about your job? I don't know. I mean, no offense, but I don't really know you all that well, I think you'd be a better judge on what she needs to hear first from you than I would.

I know it's weird, talking to your inmate for the first time, and I'm glad you want advice on how to do it, but these are the kind of judgment calls you need to make for yourself, at the end of the day.

How have you been adjusting to the barge?

I'll keep an eye out for her. [She doesn't need to ask what Rose looks like; she watches the comms carefully.]

I'm not riled. [Just agitated by being here and having to go through this crap, nbd.]

[Clint just listens and nods, mulling over the words.] Absolutely.

[eyebrow raise] worried that I'm going to shoot you?

I'll make the deal for Phil. [because talking about the dead is easier then dealing with the living.] It's weird. I want to make a joke about it, but I know I shouldn't. We're grieving for a man who - the last I saw him he was still alive.

[despite EVERYTHING, Clint smiles.] Well that's the end game right? the American dream?

Not exactly funny. [But she knows what he means. She isn't mourning; she's just angry.]

Well, yes, but -- I mean, we've only been seeing each other since she got here.

I became a villain once. It was a port, not a breach, I fell overboard and... it was weird. Like, you know, you feel things, and you don't forget what you felt, and you understand why they did what they did. You know it's wrong, and you feel guilty for doing bad things, but you still get it, and still remember those feelings.

...exactly. [He shrugs his shoulders] I guess...it put me in the shoes of somebody similar to someone I know so I was a little upset about that.

Either me or your inmate. I'll take the fact that you appear to have a sense of humor as a good sign.

[Clint laughs] I appreciate that man. Although I don't think we've been formerly introduced. Clint Barton.

Yeah. I'm afraid there's not really anything else to say about it except - it wasn't you. No matter how hollow that seems.
