Other Characters: The Comedian, Mark Hoffman, Cato.

Character Name: Clint Barton | HAWKEYE
Series: Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Age: Jeremy Renner, in the most unlikely twist in the universe is actually 40. For the purposes of canon, he's going to be 36. Born in January.
From When?: EDITED Beginning of the Avengers, just prior to his infection by the Tesseract and Loki. The admiral will grab him just before his possession so ideally there will be a log which will add some urgency to his meeting with Natasha. His deal? Stop Loki-and won't it be interesting to note that technically by being ON THE BARGE with the other avengers Clint gets that deal either way?

He will literally roll onto the boat just after Loki has taken out the SHIELD agents and just before he is about to possess him. [/Edited]

Inmate/Warden: Warden of the ~morally gray~ variety.

While Clint and Natasha have made a lot of the same choices, choosing to act violently and consider the needs of the many as opposed to the needs of the few, Clint understands that there are other options. He was not born and raised a spy, and while he choose that life and perhaps envies Fury and Natasha's occasional detachment unconsciously he accepts that there is a life beyond what he does for SHIELD. He is not hindered by his choices and is more well-adjusted then his choices. He sees this as a weakness unfortunately and will perhaps not accept it as a strength and an asset until the end of the Avengers.

However you can't keep that kind of a personality quirk out of the limelight. Clint's humor and his humanity are understated but still present. At the end of avengers he is kind to her and does not overly press her confession or tease her about it. He has learned how to be vicious, but he cannot let go of his stability. Surrounded by spies and loners, he's a person who will make friends which is how he'll approach his inmate.

Most inmates require someone who will actively work to gain their trust, that someone is Clint. He will begin a firm campaign trying to earn their trust, work with them, and engage with them about their problems. It's safe to say that with his own varied history and the things he's experienced that he could do well with quite a few different types of inmate. Depending on age, his approach will be to either attempt to be a big brother to them-or an example. He'll work to earn their trust just as actively as they might deny it.

Again, depending on the inmate he'll either end up as a mentor-showing them how to be strong and perhaps imparting a bit of his own training on them, or a partner and restoring their faith in others. He would work well with either type, somebody who needs to learn to have strength or somebody who needs to find faith in a system again and then perhaps make the leap outside of it. He performed the latter (to an extent) with Natasha Romanoff. Working as a partner with her and convincing her that trust was key was and is important. Initially when he thinks of rehabilitation he will think of something similar to that.

He won't have any doubt about his rehabilitation methods either-which could be dangerous. He might also allow his inmates a little too much freedom and perhaps be a little too harsh with punishments. His initial approach would and will be to walk the line with his inmate. Clint Barton is struggling with a sense of identity and in punishment-initially he might take a route as approved by SHIELD which might be talking to his inmate or even perhaps hitting them really really hard. However he'll relax, perhaps go off and have a chat and shoot some arrows-and then come back and be willing to discuss things again.

His ultimate goal? He won't have one. The things that he wants are things that he has to earn on his own. He could potentially be persuaded to make a deal for someone else, for another inmate or for a warden. Any and all attempts to have Natasha removed from the barge because "She's not an inmate" should be downplayed almost instantly.

Item: Clint isn't always Hawkeye. The bow and arrows will stay in his cabin unless he's operating with them or on high alert. His item will be a SHIELD issue cellular phone that transmits text and updates to him. Bow and arrows? Stay locked down.

Abilities/Powers:

Clint is a former circus performer. Traditionally sharpshooting acts like the one he was trained in involve trick riding in addition to trick shooting with a variety of projectile firing weaponry. Clint is an acrobat-although his skills have waned considerably in favor of staying put and covering Natasha during missions. His biggest strength is working with arrows, although he is an expert shot with high powered rifles, pistols, grenade launchers, and anything else that fires something at something else. It all stems from arrows however, which is why he'll only be claiming worlds greatest marksman status with arrows as opposed to bullets. Given that he came this close to shooting Loki through the eye this is not a boast to be taken lightly.

His training has given him experience in hand-to-hand combat and languages-the only person who outclasses him in hand-to-hand is Natasha and the only person who outclasses him in languages is Natasha and Fury although he's focused on Russian, Arabic, and English as his primaries. His brother is far more talented in both of these areas.

Clint also has some moderate skill with riding horses-thanks to his childhood. Chances are he would need some time to become acclimated, but it's a useful if esoteric skill that you never know, could come in handy.

Clint's biggest unrecognized skill is that he's a born showman. He knows how to play to a crowd and how to manipulate them. He rarely has a chance to use this skill however, so it might go unrecognized (and is in place as a nod to his comic canon)

Personality:

Clint Barton in the Movie Universe differs a great deal from Clint in the comic universe. In the comic universe he banters, offering witty remarks and an almost brash attitude compared to Tony Stark and Spider Man. In the comics he's at the forefront of the fight charging in and holding his own with the other Avengers. How he joined the Avengers reeks of showmanship-he arranged a means to show off in front of them and was accepted. He's a born showman, talented, slightly egotistical, compassionate, and somehow confident enough in himself to stand straight and tall in a world becoming increasingly more and more filled with meta humans and super humans. (His own wife becoming injected with the super soldier serum and the infinity serum.)

Clint in the movies has some of those qualities and attributes, but he and Natasha are both played down into typical assassins from action films. If Natasha is Angelina Jolie in Salt-the compromised American raised from childhood to be a Russian Sleeper cell, then Clint is Ethan Hunt-the all American farmboy raised to hunt down the Russian sleeper agent. Somehow in this universe they defy convention and end up as friends. The question of how is never directly addressed in the Avengers and Clint's motivations are hidden by Loki's influence for the majority of the film.

As stated in the history section of the app, I have to incorporate elements of the comic backstory to make a character out of someone who spends most of the film under Loki's influence. Hence the idea that Clint at least knew how to perform to a crowd and how to draw in people's attention. That perhaps at one point he was used to being a focal point and that people were drawn to him (much like his comic counterpart) he had a normal life that was shattered with his brother's actions and confronting that there were unusual people in the world (basically that of dare devil and the SHIELD organization.) that was enough to shake Clint's foundations.

How can you make that work with movie canon? Clint's complete and utter professionalism around unusual activity. The Tesseract's behavior is something he's able to calmly and rationally discuss with Fury, he even makes an observation that somehow all of the scientists in the room seem to miss. That shows he's accepted that odd things exist. The difference is, as Natasha points out later in the film that there's far more then either of them have realized and SHIELD does not always know what to do.

That's the biggest difference between movie Clint and Comic Clint. Watching the Avengers, you notice that the tesseract seems to grant people the things that they want in exchange for working for it's preservation. Stellan Skaarsgard's character is given knowledge-Clint becomes an emotionless drone. He becomes the model soldier and when he wakes up and faces Natasha with that:

"you know what it's like to be unmade."

"You know I do."

Stellan Skaarsgard's character gives us the biggest clue about the Tesseract and it's motivations. Clint is completely and utterly willing to be Loki'd and in exchange he has no doubts at all. That implies that he was full of doubts and perhaps-even unconsciously wanted to emulate Natasha and Fury-the die hard spies that he doesn't feel he can keep up with.

Clint is a soldier who gave up performing and showmanship to fit in with a group. The typical individual who seeks out working for an organization wants to belong. They lack an identity as an individual or wish to change their identity and work towards a group goal. Clint's deference to Captain America shows that he knows how to follow orders. He had to have learned this from family members or someone close to him-hence my supposition in his history that his family came from a family of soldiers. His desire to emulate Fury and Natasha however says that he seeks a role model and therefore he would want to be like them and Maria-the rest of SHIELD which inhibited his normally outgoing and showmanship behavior.

That's not to say that he can't be a showman and that's how he spent the early years of his life. His brother's betrayal and earlier trauma closed him off and arriving in a group where he was accepted and could possibly give up his identity was welcome and wanted. He relies very heavily on his SHIELD relationships as his relationship with his family and friends as "clint Barton" is very strained. Being friends with Natasha has opened him back up, as well as allowing himself to be mentored by Fury. The tesseract took that desire and used it against him, giving him the chance to emulate them, in it's favor.

The two biggest relationships in his life are Natasha Romanoff and Nick Fury. Natasha and he clearly have history. She mentions Budapest which implies a string of missions where they worked together in addition to working seperately. She discusses her history with Loki with him and how she owes him a debt-that he saved her life in the course of some great adventure. He clearly looks out for her in some capacity, half big brother, half lover, half partner and even to an extent half mentor. He seems concerned that she's stepped out of her role of spy and turned into a soldier like him.

His relationship with Nick Fury can be taken from a single look in a brilliant piece of acting by Sam Jackson. As Loki...Loki's him, as he holsters his weapon, the camera cuts back to Fury and Fury looks completely and utterly horrified. It's a fraction of a second shot, but that can easily illustrate that there is emotion there. Later in the film he refers to Clint as one of the sharpest men he knew-showing that he cares about his agents and that Clint perhaps rated high on that scale and he regretted losing him.

The irony behind all of this is that Clint embraced SHIELD because he wanted to be a soldier, wanted discipline and wanted to escape in some small way emotion and feeling. The biggest thing that he brings to SHIELD however, is an understated sense of humor that the place needs. This can be illustrated by the way he behaved after being freed from Loki's control. Worried about Natasha, realizing that she was worried about him and coming back into his own. We don't get to see much of his rehabilitation and recovery. It's clear he's going to have a long road to get back to a sense of normalacy and get over what he did in the name of being a soldier, but when he behaves as one he realizes that humanity is what makes him the biggest asset to the team.

While he can't escape the ever-growing tide of change in the world, people will continue to become more and more superhuman, Natasha will eventually date the Winter Soldier who was best friends with Captain America and his wife might in fact become a mutant/mutated he seems to accept it. Throughout his Marvel history Clint has remained the every man with arrows and it's a safe bet that even though he might play a minor role in the film series to filter out Black Widow's stand alone prequel and any other characters films, he'll still bring a much needed dose of humanity to the series just as he did in the comic books.

EDITEDHis attitude towards the barge will be one of mistrust and anger initially. Natasha is not inmate material-and while his deal would be "Stop Loki, save SHIELD" he'd need to be talked out of making a deal to make people see just how stupid they're being about her. Because of this, he would approach everything-including ports and changes with a grain of salt however being grabbed and returning to mind-manipulation will be easier to deal with-thanks to the barge. If you have been a younger version of you or a plant or something else being Loki's bitch-while humiliating-wouldn't crack him in-two.

In the long run, it will be beneficial and while he won't be one of the investigative types he will at least try to help out. His one soft spot being Natasha and providing her aid if required-I've spoken with both mods and they seem excited about the idea. Everything else-think of him as a Jesse-Class warden who might be inclined rather then straight up ask questions. Even Clint could stand to learn something on the barge. His attitude however will not be one of straight up wonder or awe. However when it helps him cope with his own problems he will be more grateful beyond the initial anger at the admiral incarcerating his partner and friend./EDITED

History:
Author Note~

Comics are a marriage of a perfect and an imperfect medium. Trying to reconstruct an entire character back story from a series of books that twist backwards, forwards, incorporate gods, monsters, and magic-might very well be nigh impossible. It takes a special kind of dedication to a character and a storyline to reconstruct that in a coherent manner for people to apply to a game. While some would argue that it takes a degree of insanity to attempt it, Hollywood disagrees and attempts to condense years of back story into a two hour period.

This has caused a dilemma among fans. Does the dedication of a long-time reader outweigh those of an individual who has just spent two hours watching Joss Whedon or anyone else blow up things on a screen? Will there be a happy marriage of the two where people can compliment individuals on successful adaptations of comic canon and movie studios can condense years of dedication into a succinct history?

In essence, that is what I've attempted here with Clint's back story. Clint has been around in comics since the 1960s in at least three different incarnations (Hawkeye, Bullseye, and Ronin). While I will summarize this for mod interest, I've attempted to combine elements from his canon incarnations into creating a character who might fight into the Cinema Universe since-we get nothing about Clint at all. I've also worked with various Natashas to work up a history for the two of them since the most human interaction that we have with Barton involves Natasha.

Anyway, that's where I'm coming from. Thanks for listening guys.

~ Comic Canon.

Clint and Barney Barton were born in Waverly Iowa to parents who were alcoholic and abusive. They fufilled a childhood dream for most children, running away to the Carson Carnival of Oddities where Clint fell in with Trick Shot-the stunt shooter and trick rider. Clint trained under him, billing himself as "The world's best Marksman" until the fateful day that Tony Stark saved several carnival patrons from a collapsing carnival ride. Inspired, Clint set himself up to be a masked hero and use his skills for seeming good.

Clint in comic canon was less of a skilled assassin and more of a naive circus performer. He made several mistakes, falling in with the Black Widow who used him as an accomplice in the theft of important technology. Falling in love with her, she broke his heart and he resolved to be a "straight shooter" from then on. He set himself up as a vigilante until the fateful day that he saved Edward Jarvis and his mother from robbers. Jarvis suggested a trial run wherein Clint would take part in a staged robbery of the Avengers mansion and prove himself worthy of admittance.

The rest as they say is history.
And if you have a yen to read more about that history mosey-on-over here

Today's discerning movie audiences are less likely to buy pym particles, transformations, sudden deaths and re-emerging individuals. Or at least it would require a lot more set up. Clint's past is filled with set ups for future follies and marvel plot lines.

Born in Waverly Iowa to Buck "Trick Shot" Barton and Lucille a former choir girl, Clint was a younger son in a family that owned a ranch and spent summers and seasons traveling the country with the Carson family circus. Clint and his older brother Barney were raised amid clowns and beautiful women, fanciful animals, dogs, and horses. Buck-who's family had traveled with the carnival since the early 1900s-raised his boys to the life. Initially Barney was more of his father's son-raised on tales of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest. He convinced his brother however that the Barton men had this in their blood. He ought to put down his Captain America comic books and come work in the business.

Clint tried, and discovered he had a gift.

A naturally keen eye, a steady hand, and an almost passively calm demeanor in the face of crowds Clint was a born archer. Buck took a shine to that and at the behest of the carnival owner trained Clint himself. Barney, horrified at what his actions had caused retreated and dreamed of escaping the carnival life. Clint spent his summers traveling around with Trick Shot Barton and Lee the wonder horse. He learned to ride, shoot, and throw knives at a will-gal. His brother and his mother faded into the background and Clint skated through school on easy charm. Barney was blessed with his father's training and a keen mind, Clint was blessed with natural ability, his father's training, and a natural will to play to a crowd.

The Barton Family's luck changed dramatically when Clint was 15 and Barney was Eighteen. The Carson Carnival was bought by Ringling Brothers. Gone were the days of traveling the country, the bright and fanciful animals and costumes. To pay the bills the Barton family sold Lee and that day Buck Barton picked up a bottle and crawled in-refusing to crawl out. Barney took charge and fled when he was eighteen, promising to send for his brother. Fate brought them together far too soon when Buck was arrested for trying to break into the liquor store. Barney showed up fresh from the marine core and offered Clint a place with him. Clint readily agreed.

Having done particularly poorly in school he joined the military and instantly attracted the attention of the sharpshooter division. Clint brought the same skill to firearms that he did to a bow-natural talent. By this time the United States was making it's first forays into the middle east and Clint was sent to the sandbox, picking off men in humvees and looking for harder targets. Years of working under his father however had taught him to hate guns. In the long run he would prefer silent weaponry and asked repeatedly to be allowed to use a bow. He was laughed out of every commander's office.

Barney was working in intelligence and development. He was recruited straight from the Marine core into the FBI. Clint remained a sharp shooter, enjoying the marine life style and adapting well to the team and making friends. He tried to follow in his brother's footsteps and set him to learning Arabic and Russian. While he picked them up, he had no real stealth or skill at all. Barney and Clint remained close however, Barney picking up Clint after his girlfriends and Clint supporting Barney in his quest to win over one of the women he worked with at the bureau.

Buck re-entered his son's lives out of the blue, showing up on Barney's doorstep and asking to speak to them. He explained that their mother had died and he was hoping to restart their act. Clint was more then ready to to agree but Barney threw the old man out and told him not to come back. Buck fled and Clint and Barney argued about their respective places in the world. Barney accused Clint of being stuck in the past and Clint accused him of denying who he was.

The two did not reconcile until a botched sting in San Francisco's China Town. Barney was captured and held for over a week. When he returned he was different, reclusive and shy. He didn't return Clint's phonecalls. Clint insisted that he be allowed to talk to him, wanted to find out more information and the bureau denied his requests for access. Frustrated, Clint took up archery again and-on a drunken bet-outshot the rest of his sniper unit with a bow and arrow.

The incident attracted a lot more attention then Clint had attended. He was approached no less then eight times by an African American man with an eyepatch who asked him if he would be willing to join a new organization to serve, protect, and defend freedom. Clint initially disagreed until Barney mentioned that this was director Fury of SHIELD and that he had taken a position with them. Clint disagreed with his motivations and insisted he was happy with the marines.

His situation soon deteriorated with a rash of assassinations in New York City attributed to the City's "Kingpin". Barney, tasked with bringing the sharp shooter to justice spent a very harried and awful summer in New York City where he came across his first costumed vigilante-the super hero daredevil. Considering him a menace to society and an unapproved law enforcement official Barney allowed himself to be drawn off course despite Dare Devil's insistence that they work together.

That assassin, an Irish hitman named bullseye escaped and Clint was reprimanded by his superiors. Depressed, he retreated into himself only to meet Bobbi Morse, a doctor and researcher at a local hospital. She and Barney began to date until Barney, thinking it was serious brought her home to meet his brother.

The two of them hit it off and Clint became seriously involved with her. Barney retreated without a word, leaving Clint unaware of his true feelings and how he had been hurt by his brother. One night, the two went out on a date and were summarily involved in a gang related shooting. Clint protected Bobbi-but she fled, after taking out one of the assailants herself. The mob was taken care of then by dare-devil who was framed for the attack. Barney blamed daredevil and Clint resolved to find him and warn him.

Not to arrest dare devil but assist him.

Clint spoke with the vigilante and learned that William Fisk had dealings with someone inside SHIELD who was providing technology to the city along with chemicals and biological weaponry. Clint initially struggled, he was no investigator-until it became clear the person who was the mole inside SHIELD was Barney. Depressed and angry at his failure to be a solid first born son had allowed himself to be recruited by his father who had joined with Fisk's organization and was working with Bullseye. His kidnapping had been the deciding issue.

Clint, working independantly and his brother met in the Sherwood Warehouse where Clint shot their father after he taunted his son about wanting a place in the world when he was "little more then a carnie at heart." Barney, beyond angry, shot at Clint. The two traded blows until Clint shot to kill and sent his brother over the edge of a cliff. No body was ever recovered.

Clint's actions led to a dishonorable discharge for insubordination from the United States Marine core. Clint he was approached by Nick Fury, director of SHIELD. He agreed to join the organization.

Depressed over the loss of his father and the betrayal of his brother Clint poured himself into training. He became an expert in hand-to-hand combat, polished his command of the languages his brother had insisted that he learn. He revived his acrobatic skills and honed all of his abilities to an A-type human level running from his own inadequacy as a human being and trying to regain some of his self worth.

This devotion to his new training cost him his girlfriend. Bobbi explained that she would wait for him and that she would always love him but she needed warmth in return. She left to take a position at Culver university working under Betty Ross's team and Clint let her go-refusing to face his problems. He became Nick Fury's shadow and volunteered for tougher and tougher assignments. As the years passed Fury became a second father to Clint. He allowed the younger man to work out his problems. Clint became notorious in the underworld and was a known spy, reporting everything and involving himself in nothing.

He was the Hawk, in and out. The best.

Neither Fury nor Clint thought anything of the Dubai assignment. Fury sent Clint in to track Natasha Romanoff, a former Russian sleeper agent and spy who had turned contractor for a major cartel. Clint's unconventional training was "perfect" for this assignment (according to Fury) so Clint followed her for three weeks until he was sure that she had made him. They met in a restaurant-the prancing elephant. Just before they could exchange blows however the Cartel brought in their army who had their own bone to pick with the spider.

It took Clint to make a split second decision. He took point and defended Romanoff against her attackers. Swinging into the fight he passed her one of his own guns and fired arrows while she fired bullets. It was beautiful, masterful, ballet that ended with both of them staring at each other balefully. She ran and Clint pursued her. He pinned her in an alleyway where they fought again before Clint was interrupted by the SHIELD SWAT team.

To his surprise, he did not want to see her die or see her arrested. He took fury aside and begged for her life. Nick Fury offered her a choice-jail for her crimes or working for SHIELD. She chose the latter and Fury said that Clint would show her the ropes and Phil Coulson would handle them both. So much for trying to help. Clint and Natasha spent several very terse assignments being openly hostile. Clint made an effort to work with her and she quickly learned his habits and mannerisms. She saved his life in Pakistan and he saved hers in Mumbasa. It became a pattern where they learned to enjoy each other's company.

Clint's situational depression eased and he became more of his self around her. The damage had been done of course-he was no longer the born showman who would willingly share his feelings with anyone-but he began to resemble something more human and less of an inhuman robot. SHIELD became a family that Clint felt accepted into and any reports of his brother's activities were firmly shoved out of mind. Apparently he had taken up a "mantle" too, inspired by the actions of Tony Stark. Trick Shot was rapidly replacing bulls eye as the criminal of choice for sharp shooting and assassination.

He confessed that to Natasha and poured out the whole story about how Barney's traitor behavior had destroyed his relationships with others and with his long-time girlfriend. Natasha in turn opened up about her training and the two of them poured out their secrets. That led to sex in a Thai hotel-the two of them driven by isolation and conflicted feelings, seeking solace in companionship.

Things became instantly awkward. From Clint's vantage point he could not see her as anything but a partner without worrying for her safety and creating further dangerous situations. He asked for split assignments that Fury was only happy to provide, Coulson keeping track of Natasha while Clint worked alone with another handler. The two came together again shortly after that and realized that their bond had become far too deep to ignore. Clint made jokes, Natasha brought pain, it was a marriage of talent and they became the unofficial poster children for SHIELD.

Specific situations required different skill sets however. After Stark's iron man became the talk of cities across the country Natasha was dispatched to keep an eye on him and recruit him to a pet project of Fury's that Clint had only vaguely heard of. Clint was dispatched to New Mexico where he encountered the demi-god Thor, working directly with Agent Coulson.

It was with Coulson-or well at the new assignment in New Mexico where he encountered Loki and that was the end of that. The next thing he knew he was dealing face to face with the admiral who offered him a deal-stay and potentially suffer or head off the oncoming storm. Clint's decision was obvious-and the biggest reason why he's a warden. It's a daunting realization, to learn you're actually a good person.

Eventually Clint will be canon updated. Having just felt comfortable working with SHIELD he'll be reduced to anger and fear however we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Sample Journal Entry:

[There's a video, suddenly on the networks and it's of a young slightly nerdy man wearing a pair of glasses and a white dress shirt and tie. He looks bright, chipper, eager.]

Gosh I'm glad to be working with all of you. My name is William Brandt and I work with Nicole Reese. If you need people to help you file anything or work with paperwork I'm your guy. [BEAMING] I'm finalizing my psych major and I work in public relations so I'm here for team building and one-on-one work.

I just know we're going to be great friends everybody. Few beers, toss the pigskin around. It'll be great.

[Clint hates this identity but until he knows the lay of the land he isn't doing squat to reveal himself]

[Private to Natasha]

...Anything you want to tell me about why you and Tony Stark are taking a rehab trip on a magic spaceboat?

~ Failing that.

[Camera's on and there's a man wearing black, black kevlar, black shirt. His location might seem a bit odd because he's very clearly...off the ground broadcasting from the CES.]

Hi.

[Some of you may have seen him. Some of you may have been given a false name.]

Ordinarily [Ordinarily he does things like this pretending to be someone else.] Well. I'm not required to make speeches.

Hi. [SO AWKWARD] My name's Clint Barton. I answer to Agent Barton and Barton. I work for the federal government. I'm here as a warden, and given that there doesn't seem to be a central authority beyond the guy who showed up out of nowhere..

I brought my computer and it's filled with cat gifs. They're not even my cat gifs.
